Who are we building for.
State of residence and federal tax bracket drive the ticker decisions downstream — muni vs taxable, VBIL vs DUSB.
How much fixed income, and how long.
Years 1–2 land in ultra short. Years 3–4 in short duration. Years 5+ in intermediate duration. The rest is equity.
Gross. Don't back out Social Security or pensions unless those are guaranteed and lifelong.
Years 1–2 of spending. Always 2× annual income in VBIL (tax state) or DUSB (no state tax / tax-deferred).
DFSD/DFIP mix. Default 2 years extends defensive coverage out to year 4.
Years of additional fixed income protection beyond short duration. Length depends on risk tolerance.
Max realized capital gains for this year in the taxable account. Set to 0 to disable. Used to gate sells of low-basis positions and generate a multi-year transition plan.

What the portfolio should look like.
Where each dollar lives.
Roth first, equity. Taxable takes ultra-short, then short duration up to capacity. Tax-deferred absorbs intermediate and any overflow. Low-basis equity positions that already exist are counted toward the equity sleeve and stay where they are.
